Digital Photography Workshop

Get Acquainted At A Digital Photography Workshop

As with most relatively new technology, there are people who shy away from computers, not out of real fear but out of misunderstanding. It isn’t the technology that causes anxiety as much as the terminology. Confused? You don’t have to be - attending a digital photography workshop can introduce you to the meaning of the language as well as others just as confused as you.

It’s OK to admit you don’t know what pixilated means or that you don’t know the difference between PPI and DPI. That’s what the digital photography workshop is there to teach you. The great thing about a digital photography workshop is most people you meet there are probably in the same confused situation.

PPI vs. DPI

One of the most misunderstood terms in the digital age of photography is the difference between PPI (pixels per inch) and DPI (dots per inch). PPI deals with screen resolution while DPI deals with print resolution. While what you see on the screen is important, what comes out on paper is even more so.

Basically, the higher the DPI the better the print will look and it will show more fine detail in printed pictures. Pixels per inch become important if you want to make a slide presentation, which are pictures on a CD where fine detail will make a difference in presentation.

Therefore learning at a digital photography workshop the difference in how the image appears on your computer screen and what determines the quality of your printed photograph can be an enlightening experience. Other aspects of learning at a digital photography workshop may include lighting, composition, and editing software and how to manipulate your images on your computer to achieve the desired effect, which isn’t always putting a trout’s face where Uncle Bob’s head is.

Unless you’re a real recluse and take a digital photography workshop online, you will meet other people in the same boat and it’s a great experience to watch the light bulb of understanding get brighter as the session progresses.

To find a digital photography workshop near you, check with your local career center or vocational school’s adult education department. Many such courses are offered free of charge with the instructor being experienced in digital photography. They may not be able to define the history and all the minute details of the technology, but they can teach you the main points you need to understand for you to get really good results out of your camera.
